Your 5-point furnace check list
When you call Reliance™ with a home heating problem, we’re always happy to send help fast. But to save you the inconvenience and cost of an unnecessary visit, here are five things that you can check before giving us a call:
Check that your thermostat is set to ‘heat’
Forgetting to turn the thermostat from ‘cool’ to ‘heat’ happens more often than you may think. If the temperature outside drops and no warm air is blowing into your home, the first thing to check is your thermostat setting.
Check that your furnace is switched on
Many people don’t know that their furnace has a switch – called the disconnect switch – to turn off its power. This safety feature is usually located on the side of the unit, or on a nearby wall. If something leans against it, the switch can be turned off by mistake. Or, someone may turn off the furnace and forget to turn it back on. If your furnace doesn’t seem to be working, check the switch and make sure it’s turned on.
Check your breaker panel
The power to your furnace is controlled through your home’s breaker panel. Sometimes the circuit that controls your furnace shuts off. If your furnace lacks power, it may be a good idea to check that the circuit breaker marked ‘furnace’ is in the right position.
Check that your furnace vents are clear
Did you know that your furnace has air vents that lead from the outside of your home to your heating system? If they become blocked by snow, ice, dirt, debris, or animals who are hiding inside, your furnace may fail to work properly. If you notice a change in your home heating, take a look to ensure that the venting is clear. Keep in mind that a full inspection should be left to a professional.
Check your furnace filter
An old or dirty filter may affect your furnace’s ability to properly heat your home. Most furnace filters should be changed every three months, or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. While most furnace filters are easy to clean or change, if you are unsure of how to do this, we’d be happy to give you a hand.
How do I know if my home is heated by a furnace or a boiler?
If your home is heated by hot air blown through ductwork, then you have a furnace. If your home is kept warm by radiators, radiant heating, and fan coils, then you have a boiler system that works by heating and distributing a liquid.
How does a furnace work?
Furnaces ignite fuel in a combustion chamber, which heats up a coiled tube called a heat exchanger. Air is drawn across the heat exchanger coils and warmed up. This warm air is then distributed to different rooms of your house through your ductwork.
What can I do to save money on my heating bills?
A professional energy audit can help to identify opportunities to make your home more energy efficient. Ask Reliance™ if you qualify for grants to help you cover the costs. However, even without an energy audit there are steps that you can take in order to conserve energy and reduce your energy bills.
- Consider upgrading your furnace. A modern high efficiency furnace will allow you to enjoy a warm home all winter long while using less energy than an older model. At Reliance™, you always have the option to rent or buy your furnace.
- Install a programmable thermostat. Monitoring and taking control of your home heating system may help you reduce your energy use.
- Seal any leaky windows and doors to prevent heat loss.
- If you have an older home, consider adding more insulation and upgrading your windows.
Is a high efficiency furnace worth the investment?
A high efficiency furnace has an AFUE rating of 92% – 98%.
What does a whole home humidifier do?
A whole home humidifier keeps the humidity levels in your home stable, regardless of the weather outside. This promotes healthy air throughout your house and helps to conserve energy. A whole home humidifier may increase the value of your property.
How can I keep my furnace running properly?
While only a qualified professional should open and repair your furnace, there are things that all homeowners can do to keep their home heating system running smoothly between services:
- Change the air filter every three months, or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Keep the intake vents and exterior exhaust vents clean and clear of debris.
- Don’t forget to clean your home’s heating grills and / or radiators.
- Keep the area around your furnace or boiler clear.
- Book an annual inspection with your Reliance™ furnace expert for any maintenance and repairs.
Here are a few more furnace maintenance tips.
When should I call in a furnace professional?
- If your furnace is leaking water;
- Making unusual noises;
- Not heating your home properly;
- Seems unusually dusty;
- Or if you notice an unexplained spike in your heating bills.
Should I rent or buy my new furnace?
At RelianceTM, you always have the option to rent or buy a new furnace. Buying a furnace is a large investment in your home, and you will be responsible for any maintenance and repair costs.
Buying may however increase the value of your house, and you can protect yourself from unexpected repair bills through a comprehensive Protection Plan from RelianceTM. On the other hand, if you choose to rent a new furnace, you will pay one low monthly fee and Reliance™ will be responsible for maintenance and repairs.
I’m upgrading my furnace. Should I get a new AC too?
If you are upgrading your furnace it can make sense to upgrade your AC too. This is because systems designed to work together are more energy efficient; this could help you save on your energy bills.
