The thermostat

Is it set to heat? It’s surprisingly easy to forget to switch your thermostat from ‘cool’ to ‘heat’ when the cold weather hits. So double-check, just to be sure.

The furnace switch

Is it on? Your furnace has a safety feature called the disconnect switch, usually located on the side of your equipment or nearby on the wall. Sometimes it gets flipped by accident – if an item is leaned up against it, or if someone turns it off and forgets to turn it back on. If your furnace doesn’t have power, check the switch.

The circuit breaker

Is it set to ‘on’? Your home’s breaker panel contains a circuit for your furnace. If it has shut off, your home won’t have heat. Check your breaker panel and make sure the breaker is in the right position.

The furnace vents

Are they clear? Your furnace may not work properly if the air vents that lead from the outside of your home are blocked. Snow, slush, debris, or small animals nesting inside can all cause a problem. The furnace filter

Is it old? Your furnace filter should be changed every three months or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Filters become dirty over time and may cause your furnace to underperform. If you notice a change in your home heating, a new furnace filter may be the only fix you need.
