5 Things to Check before You Call for Furnace Repairs

At Reliance™, expert furnace repair technicians are just a phone call away. While we’re always happy to come out to your home to service or repair a furnace that isn’t blowing heat into your home, there are five simple things you can check to help you avoid the cost of an unnecessary call.

Check your thermostat

Is your thermostat set to ‘heat’? It may sound obvious, but it’s easy to forget to move the setting from ‘cool’ to ‘heat’ when the temperature outside begins to fall. The setting may also have been changed by accident by a member of your household, so it’s always good to check this setting if your home is not heating properly.

Check that your furnace is on

Your furnace has a safety feature – the disconnect switch – that turns off the power (you can usually find it on the side of your furnace or close by on the wall). Sometimes the switch gets turned off accidentally if something is leaning against it, or perhaps someone has turned it off and forgotten to turn it back on. So if your furnace doesn’t seem to be working, check to make sure the switch is set to ‘on’.

Check your circuit breaker

Has the circuit breaker that controls your furnace shut off? Look in your home’s breaker panel and make sure the breaker marked ‘furnace’ is set to ‘on.’

Check your furnace vents

Your furnace has air vents leading form the outside of your home to your heating system. If the vents are blocked by snow, dirt, debris, or small animals who may have climbed inside, your furnace will not work properly. A furnace technician from Relianceâ„¢ can do a thorough vent inspection, but it can also be worthwhile to take a quick look yourself.

Check your furnace filter

Your furnace has a filter that should be replaced every three months, or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. A dirty filter can affect your furnace’s ability to heat your home and shorten the lifespan of your heating equipment. If you are not sure how to change your furnace filter, or which type of furnace filter you need, ask your Reliance™ repair specialist.
