With the Clean Home Heating Initiative rebate, you can be part of a very cool program offered by the Government of Ontario.

What is the Enbridge Clean Home Heating Initiative?

The 2023 Clean Home Heating Initiative is a pilot program run by Enbridge Gas in certain cities in Ontario; Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Barrie Peterborough, St. Catharines, Sault Ste. Marie and London. You could be eligible to receive up to a $3,000 mail-in-rebate for the purchase and installation of an air source heat pump or up to a $4,500 mail-in-rebate for the purchase and installation of a cold climate air source heat pump. The program is designed to promote heat pumps combined with an energy-efficient gas furnace and a smart thermostat. These hybrid heating system will switch automatically back and forth between electricity and natural gas depending on energy costs and weather. Who is Eligible for the Clean Home Heating Initiative?

To be eligible for the Clean Home Heating Initiative rebate, you must:

  • Be a current Enbridge Gas residential customer and on time-of-use electricity rates.
  • Own a home in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Barrie, Peterborough, St. Catharines, Sault Ste. Marie or London within the preset postal code zones
  • Your home is heated with a condensing natural gas furnace.
  • You have a central air conditioner or are looking to replace or add a new air conditioner. You can still participate if you do not currently have AC.
  • Your home must have ducts.
  • Your home has WIFI for the smart controls to access.
  • You must rent or purchase and install an eligible Air Source or Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump.

What Are the Steps Required to apply for the Clean Home Heating Initiative Rebate?

  1. Book a free in-home consultation with one of our Home Comfort Advisors to help you select a rebate-eligible heat pump and help you complete the Homeowner Agreement required by the rebate application.
  2. Our licensed technician will install your heat pump and smart controls, take before and after photos of your equipment and submit your rebate application to Enbridge Gas.
  3. You should receive your mail-in-rebate from Enbridge Gas in approximately 120 days.

FAQs

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can also run in reverse. In summer, it transfers heat from inside your home to the outdoors, reversing this on cool fall and spring days to move heat from the outdoors back into your home.

The technology is the same as your refrigerator. Your fridge is a heat pump – it transfers heat from inside the unit, out. That is why the back of your refrigerator emits heat.

A hybrid heating system has many benefits:

  • Flexibility over which fuel source you want to use – electricity or gas
  • In the event of a furnace breakdown, you can rest assured you can keep your home warm and help prevent your pipes from freezing with the heat pump

A cold climate heat pump is a bit more efficient than a standard air source heat pump at colder temperatures which means it has a greater capacity to heat efficiently at lower temperatures.3

Yes! Depending on the equipment, your heat pump can operate down to between -25c and -30c. The ability to heat efficiently will decline as it gets frigid out, and your hybrid heating system will switch to the gas furnace automatically.

No. The Greener Homes Canada Grant requires an energy audit, but this program does not.

You may be eligible to receive a $3000 mail-in-rebate on a new air source heat pump and a $4500 mail-in-rebate on the cost of a new cold climate air source heat pump. In terms of running costs, this all depends on the price of gas and electricity. A hybrid system lets you decide which energy source you want to use for most of the year, and the smart controls can switch between using the heat pump and your gas furnace according to fuel rates and weather.

The Greener Homes Canada Grant has a myriad of rebates available besides those for heat pumps. You may be eligible for all non-heat pump rebates if you participate in the Clean Home Heating Initiative.

Yes! Rental equipment is eligible under the Clean Home Heating Initiative program. Renting a heat pump is a great way to get top-of-the-line equipment with one affordable monthly payment.

Heat Pump technology has been around for a long time and it is commonly used in many
parts of the world as a way for families to both heat and cool their homes.
It can be an efficient and cost-effective way to stay comfortable, while possibly helping
to reduce your carbon footprint.
The best way to describe a heat pump is like
an air conditioning unit that can operate in reverse.
During the summer, it helps to keep you cool by removing heat from inside your home and
moving it outside.
It keeps your home comfortable in the colder months by removing heat from the outside air
and circulating it back indoors.
These units run on electricity, and work seamlessly
with your furnace or back-up heat source so
that your back-up heat source automatically takes over when the temperature becomes too
cold outside for the heat pump to work effectively.
And for added convenience, heat pumps can also work with your existing ductwork and
furnace fan to move air throughout your home.
There are several different types of heat
pumps that are available, depending on your needs, your current heating and cooling set-up,
and your budget.
The most common is air source, and as the name suggests, it absorbs heat from the air
and moves it either in-to or out-of your home, depending on the season.
Geothermal, or ground source heat pumps, operate like the air source units, however they use
the earth or ground water to source and to expel heat.
The more consistent temperatures found underground can help to make this type run more efficiently,
especially during the hotter and colder days of the year.
Stand-alone units that do not require traditional ductwork are also available.
Using a heat pump could create greater overall
comfort in your home, providing consistent temperatures throughout the year.
Heat pumps move heat rather than creating it, so they can help to reduce your energy
consumption and your costs, especially during milder months.
Since they run on electricity, heat pumps may produce lower CO2 emissions than a furnace
that burns fossil fuels, depending on the cleanliness of your electricity supply.
And since your furnace won’t need to be running as much, you could reduce your emissions
even further and help to protect yourself from fluctuating fuel costs.
