Your furnace troubleshooting checklist

Reliance Home Comfortâ„¢ is always just a phone call away in a home heating emergency. But sometimes, getting more heat to blow into your home is as simple as flicking a switch. Here are five things you can check before you give us a call. They may just save you the cost and inconvenience of an unnecessary house call.

  • Check your thermostat setting. Is it on ‘heat’? You’d be surprised how easy it is to forget to make the change when the temperature drops.
  • Check your furnace unit and make sure it’s turned on. You should find the switch on a nearby wall.
  • Check your home’s breaker panel. Is the circuit breaker marked ‘furnace’ in the correct position?
  • Check your furnace’s outdoor air vents. You’ll find these on the exterior of your home. Make sure they aren’t blocked by snow, ice, debris, or a nesting animal. (A thorough furnace vent inspection should be left to a professional.)
  • Check your furnace filter. Most should be changed every three months or according to the recommendations of your equipment manufacturer. If you have 4- or 5-inch media filters, they can be changed every 6 months to a year, depending on manufacturer specifications.

What can I do to keep my furnace running smoothly?

It’s time for a professional furnace inspection if you notice any of the following:

  • Change or clean your furnace filter regularly, according to the recommendations of your equipment manufacturer.
  • Keep your heating grills, radiators, intake vents, and outside exhaust vents clear.
  • Create a clear space around your furnace or boiler.
  • Schedule an annual furnace inspection and tune-up.
  • Never open your furnace or boiler unit. This should be left to a qualified HVAC technician.
